Childcare Cost Calculator UK
This childcare cost calculator helps you estimate how much you could pay for childcare in the UK across one or more children. It is useful for parents comparing nursery fees, childminder rates, breakfast clubs, after-school clubs, holiday clubs, or mixed childcare arrangements.
You can use it to build a realistic childcare budget before applying support such as Tax-Free Childcare, funded hours, or Universal Credit childcare support.
What this calculator includes
- Weekly childcare cost estimates
- Average monthly childcare costs
- Annual recurring childcare totals
- First-year cost estimates including one-off fees
- Multiple children or multiple childcare arrangements
- Extras such as meals, snacks and weekly add-ons
- Registration fees, deposits and other setup costs
How it works
The calculator multiplies the hours you pay for each week by the hourly rate for each childcare arrangement, then applies the number of weeks you expect to use that care over the year.
It then adds any weekly extras such as meals or activity charges, and optionally includes one-off costs like registration fees, deposits or other startup costs to give you a fuller first-year estimate.
Why results may vary
Actual childcare costs can vary depending on term-time only arrangements, provider holiday closures, sibling discounts, funded childcare hours, retained deposits, late collection charges, and whether meals, trips or nappies are billed separately.
Because of this, the monthly figure is best used as a budgeting average rather than a prediction of every invoice.
Who it’s for
- Parents budgeting for nursery or childminder costs
- Families comparing different childcare providers
- Households planning for breakfast club, after-school club or holiday club fees
- Anyone estimating raw childcare costs before applying support schemes
Important note
This calculator provides estimates only and does not replace quotes from childcare providers or official guidance. It does not automatically apply funded hours, Tax-Free Childcare, Universal Credit childcare support or other schemes.
Childcare cost examples
- Part-time nursery for one child can look very different from full-time care once meals and extras are added.
- Two children in mixed childcare arrangements may have lower hourly rates but higher annual costs overall.
- First-year childcare costs are often noticeably higher when deposits, registration fees and setup costs are included.
Use the calculator above to estimate your childcare costs and compare different arrangements more clearly.
